The Significance of the Climate Agenda for Tourist Destinations in Peru and Globally Peru, home to iconic destinations such as Machu Picchu and Cabo Blanco, holds a prominent position in global tourism. However, in common with other international destinations, the nation faces challenges related to climate change, which exert an impact on the environment, the local economy, and communities. The reduction of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, particularly CO2, is of fundamental importance for the protection of these destinations and to ensure their preservation for future generations. Peru, alongside the other 195 signatory nations of the Paris Agreement, is committed to substantially reducing its GHG emissions to mitigate global warming. The Circular Economy as a Key Tool Within this context, the circular economy emerges as a potent instrument for achieving these objectives. The transition from a linear model of production and consumption, characterized by “produce and discard,” to a circular model, which prioritizes the reuse, recovery, and recycling of resources, is essential for both environmental integrity and sustainable economic growth. The general objective of the project is to implement a circular development model centered on an economy where reuse, recovery, recycling, extending useful life, and reducing the carbon footprint in the tourism sector prevail, while also boosting innovation and competitiveness fairly and equitably. The Role of Green Initiative Green Initiative has established itself as a global benchmark in providing advisory services to tourist destinations, assisting them in the implementation of sustainable practices and the attainment of climate-smart management practices. The selection of the company was predicated upon its extensive experience and recognized achievements in collaborating with tourist destinations worldwide, facilitating the integration of circular economy practices and the reduction of their CO2 emissions. Green Initiative’s mission transcends the implementation of environmental policies; the organization is dedicated to transforming the operational modalities of the tourism sector, promoting climate change mitigation in an integrated manner across the entire value chain. Project Scope and Expected Results The collaboration with CANATUR and AECID presents an opportunity to disseminate this knowledge within Peru. The project aims to implement a management model based on innovative circular economy practices in 2 tourist destinations for carbon emission mitigation. Additionally, it will promote the creation of a Sectorial Commission for Circular Economy in Tourism to implement a Roadmap and flagship actions, and strengthen the capacities of tourism system actors on climate action and cleaner, circular production. The initial intervention regions are Lima, Cusco, Piura, and San Martín, although the project will have a national impact. This tourism coalition project will yield a series of deliverables that are critical for the implementation of the transition towards a more circular and sustainable tourism sector. Green Initiative will be responsible for ensuring that these deliverables are executed with the utmost quality and efficiency. Activities will include workshops, training sessions, webinars, an international conference, and the implementation of flagship actions in tourist destinations. The project aligns with global sustainable development objectives, including the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) such as SDG 13 (Climate Action), SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), and SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities). The urgency of addressing climate change has never been more evident, and a recent study underscores the potential of forest conservation and restoration in mitigating the climate crisis. Published in Nature.com and based on collaboration among hundreds of leading forest ecologists, the research emphasizes the importance of allowing existing trees to age in healthy ecosystems and restoring degraded areas. The findings suggest that through these measures, an impressive 226 gigatonnes of carbon could be sequestered—equivalent to nearly 50 years of US emissions for 2022. However, the study cautions against the simplistic approach of mass monoculture tree-planting and offsets, urging a nuanced strategy that prioritizes both carbon drawdown and biodiversity. The Carbon Sequestration Potential The study highlights that humans have cleared approximately half of Earth’s forests, with ongoing destruction in critical regions like the Amazon rainforest and the Congo basin. The research estimates that outside of urban agricultural areas in regions with low human footprints, forests can draw down significant amounts of carbon. Protecting standing forests and allowing them to mature into old growth ecosystems, such as the Białowieża forest in Poland and Belarus or California’s sequoia groves, could realize 61% of this potential. The remaining 39% could be achieved by restoring fragmented forests and areas that have already been cleared. The Role of Biodiversity Emphasizing the importance of biodiversity, the researchers warn against planting vast numbers of single species, citing that such monoculture approaches would hinder forests from realizing their full carbon drawdown potential. The study advocates for urgent cuts to fossil fuel emissions and stresses the significance of biodiversity in aiding forests to achieve their maximum carbon sequestration capabilities. Challenges and Considerations The researchers acknowledge challenges such as the increasing threat of forest fires and rising temperatures due to the climate crisis, which could diminish the potential of forests to sequester carbon. Lidong Mo, a lead author of the study, notes, “Most of the world’s forests are highly degraded. In fact, many people have never been in one of the few old growth forests that remain on Earth.” To overcome these challenges and restore global biodiversity, ending deforestation becomes a top priority. Meeting Targets and Moving Forward While acknowledging the commitment made at Cop26 in 2021 by world leaders to halt and reverse deforestation by the end of this decade, the researchers stress the need for countries to stay on track. Methane Emissions and climate change

Anthropogenic methane emissions and their implications for climate change within the next decade The Sixth Assessment Report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) stresses with high confidence that net greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions since 2010 are characterized by an increasing trend. Particularly, estimates in 2019 state the agricultural sector and other land-use activities are responsible for 22% of anthropogenic, or human-induced, global greenhouse emissions (IPCC, 2022). In this context, carbon dioxide and methane emissions have been identified to be significant contributors to global warming. Carbon dioxide, for example, once emitted into the atmosphere has been estimated to linger for roughly 300 to 1000 years (Buis, 2019) before it is fixed into biomass or mineralized into ocean or land sediments by natural processes. Thus, carbon’s multigenerational lifespan in the atmosphere often leads to a trend in climate action projects centered on reducing carbon dioxide emissions exclusively. However, methane has been found to have 84-87 times the global warming potential (GWP) than carbon dioxide on a 20-year timescale (IPCC, 2022), while estimates using the 100-year timescale, which is commonly adopted by organizations across the globe, shows a mere 24 times difference between the GWP of methane and carbon dioxide. As a result, scientists often stress the need to use cumulative metrics, that do not operate on a timescale, to accurately represent the impact of short-lived climate pollutants, like methane, on global temperatures within the next decade and consequently use this understanding to develop more efficient policies to reduce the negative effects of climate change in the near future (Allen et al., 2018). Governmental policies on methane emissions Due to alarming estimates of methane’s contribution to 30% of global warming to date (IEA, 2022), global methane initiatives strive to promote the use of methane as a clean energy source along with governmental organizations like the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) that are opting to strengthen their policies against methane emissions, and the European Union (EU), that have set ambitious goals to reduce 30% of their methane emissions by 2030. Particularly, there is increasing scientific and analytical evidence that reducing anthropogenic methane emission by 50% over the next 30 years could help to maintain the global average temperature increase below 2 degrees Celsius and therefore, contribute to the climate goals established in the Paris Agreement. (Mckinsey, 2021; Arndt, 2022) Solutions to the anthropogenic emission of methane in the agriculture sector Promoting the industry switch to reduced methane emissions is not as simple as establishing governmental sanctions across the globe for many reasons, including concerns related to food security. Hence, several solutions are being implemented to reduce methane emissions from the agriculture sector, particularly for livestock, which have been estimated to account for 32% of human-induced methane emissions (UNEP, n.d.). These solutions include: Feed additives Such as garlic, clove, and seaweed, have been found to reduce methane emissions from ruminant animals. These additives can reduce the amount of methane produced during digestion, ultimately leading to lower emissions. Alternative feeds Like oilseed crops or legumes, can improve the quality of feed and reduce the amount of methane produced by animals. Alternative feeds can also help to reduce the amount of land required for grazing and improve soil quality. Breeding and genetics Specialized programs can be used to produce animals that are more efficient in their digestion, thereby reducing the amount of methane produced during digestion. Methane capture and reuse Methane can be captured from livestock manure and reused as a source of energy. This can be done through the use of anaerobic digesters, which can convert manure into biogas that can be used for electricity or heat. Precision livestock monitoring Technologies such as remote monitoring and smart feeding and watering systems can help to improve the efficiency of livestock production and reduce methane emissions. Novel Research in Molecular Engineering: Promising Strategies for Reducing Methane Emissions in Livestock Furthermore, novel research in the field of molecular engineering has a significant potential to reduce methane emissions by manipulating the metabolic pathways of livestock and the microbial communities in their digestive tracts. One solution involves the use of feed supplements that inhibit the activity of methanogens, which are the microorganisms in the rumen of livestock that produce methane during digestion. The results observed a consistent reduction in methane gas emissions by up to 30% for dairy cows and 90% for meat cows in experimental conditions (Palangi & Lackner, 2022). In addition, other studies explored the use of RNA interference molecules (Bradford et al., 2017) to inhibit the expression of certain genes in methanogens, blocking the production of proteins involved in methane production. Other similar approaches use the well-known, and often less costly CRISPR-CAS9 gene-editing tool (Subdei et al., 2022). Although more research is needed to understand the biological mechanisms underlying methanogens, the cost-effectiveness on a large scale, and some ethical considerations involved in gene manipulation, these developments outline a promising future for the reduction of methane emissions in the agricultural industry.
